While hopes were high for the survival of a Sumatran rhino discovered in Indonesian Borneo weeks ago, her death was announced on Tuesday.

“Our hearts are saddened by this devastating news from Kalimantan,” wrote the International Rhino Foundation on their Facebook page. “There are many lessons to be learned from this event.”

Indonesia’s environment ministry said April 5 that a female Sumatran rhino — the first to make contact with wildlife officials in more than 40 years in Borneo —  young female, named Najaq, suffered from a severe leg infection, which she succumbed to after a few days of illness.
