Plagiarism has been around in the Bengali film industry for decades now. In fact, there was a time when the industry survived on copied south hits. No, not official remakes, as is the case now, but uncredited copies. Stories, songs, posters… the makers copied it all.
And now, when the industry is going through a resurgence of sorts and churning out a large proportion of original content, some filmmakers seem unable to let go of old habits. Copied posters, songs and visual sequences (especially action scenes) are still finding their way into socalled original films. CT spoke to some prominent filmmakers of the state about the problem, and here’s what they had to say.
