Melanin is the primary determinant of colour, which means we don’t have a role to play here. It’s really unfortunate that the parameter of beauty has always been defined by the melanin count. From childhood, I have heard that if you are fair, you are beautiful.
My mother told me that on my birth a few of my relatives had said, ‘Ish meye kalo hoyechhe, biye ditey oshubidha hobe (Sad, she is so dark, you won’t be able to marry her off easily)’. A girl, who is also dark, isn’t really welcomed by our society.
