They Transformed An Old, Run-Down Barn Into A Thing Of Beauty

General contractor Tom Silva brings in an excavator fitted with a hoe ram to jackhammer away the ledge standing in the way of the new basement. Using a 3D model, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey explains the anatomy of a septic system, and what we’ll have to do to bring our system up to code.

Many people living in more rural parts of the country still have barns on their property…but sadly, most go unused.

Under the jacked-up barn, master carpenter Norm Abram shows the state of the existing rubble stone foundation. For inspiration, host Kevin O’Connor travels to Vermont to meet Ken Epworth of The Barn People, a group that rescues, restores, and relocates old timberframe barns. Ken shows Kevin how the old barns come down in the field, and how they go back up as restored barns and dramatic living spaces.
