Legendary Indian body builder Manohar Aich, who was once a household name in Bengal after becoming India’s first Mr Universe in 1952, died at his Baguiati residence died on Sunday, dated 05/06/2016 in KOLKATA at the age of 104, according to family sources. He was 104.
A three-time Asian Games gold medalist, Aich was the first Indian to win the Mr Universe title post-independence in 1952. At 4 feet 11 inch, he famously nicknamed ‘Pocket Hercules’.
Aich breathed his last at his north Kolkata residence following age related health issues. Aich, who turned 104 on March 17, had become India’s first Mr Universe when he won the 1952 National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association Universe Championships.
“Aich was on a liquid died for last 10-15 days and had stopped talking. He breathed his last at 3.50pm,” his son Khokan Aich told PTI.
Age was never a deterrent for the veteran body builder , “Never quit exercise, he would always say. His mantra to stay healthy was simple — healthy eating and exercise,” Khokan added.
Aich is survived by two daughters and two sons, Born in Comilla district, now in Bangladesh, he began his career as a stuntman performing with the legendary magician PC Sorkar.
