Eight-hour rescue frees trapped orcas in Russian

Four orcas, including one small calf, have been rescued after becoming trapped by ice in the shallow waters off the Russian island of Sakhalin.

RT reports it took a team from the Russian Emergencies Ministry about eight hours to save the animals, which are also called killer whales during the ordeal, the largest of the whales – a seven-metre male – was nicknamed (what else?) “Willy”. The rescuers took boats out to meet the orcas and used hooks to push slabs of ice away from the giant creatures.
