Chinese engineers are building the Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, or FAST. China’s new radio telescope will be the largest & Biggest in the world, and will help in the search for alien life.
The telescope is under construction and is expected to be completed in 2016. It will be the world’s largest telescope, outdoing Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory by 200 meters. The main framework for the giant structure, roughly the same area as 30 football fields and has been hewed out of a mountain in the poor southwestern province of Guizhou.
When completed, telescope will be able to detect far away galaxies by studying radio frequencies. The telescope, which has taken about five years to build, is expected to begin operations in September.
