In 2006 Battle Lya and her husband Álvaro Saumet decided to save the lives of hundreds of stray animals and providing them with food, medical care and a home among the beautiful mountains of Costa Rica, is fighting the mutt stigma by naming unique new “breeds” based on the lineage of the homeless dogs they save. According to their website, “Zaguates territory is a “No-Kill Shelter,” a doglike sanctuary where we do not believe in euthanasia as a solution to the problem of abandoned dogs in Costa Rica.”
